Meet Dr. Schmetterer

Dr. Lawrence Schmetterer, a distinguished cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon in Youngstown, Ohio, has dedicated his career to saving lives and improving patient outcomes. His passion for medicine began at age 11, inspired by the groundbreaking first human heart transplant performed by Dr. Christian Barnard. A fascination with cardiovascular surgery led him to devour medical literature and fueled his ambition to become a surgeon.

His journey began with undergraduate studies at Duke University and Oxford, followed by medical school at the University of Illinois in Chicago, where he conducted research on cardiac disease. Dr. Schmetterer then pursued a general surgery residency and further specialized at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). There, he conducted groundbreaking research in pulmonary vascular function, collaborating with esteemed scientists. His commitment deepened when his own father required complex vascular and heart surgeries, reinforcing his mission to treat these life-threatening conditions.

Furthering his expertise, he trained in thoracic surgical oncology, driven by personal connections to lung cancer cases in his family.

After completing his cardiothoracic fellowship in Los Angeles, Dr. Schmetterer returned to Ohio in 1992, joining Northside Hospital and St. Elizabeth’s in Youngstown. Over the years, he expanded his practice to multiple hospitals in the Mahoning Valley, specializing in heart, lung, and vascular surgeries.

A pioneer in limb salvage surgery, he has implemented advanced techniques to prevent amputations and improve quality of life. His work in lung cancer treatment has been especially rewarding, with numerous long-term survivors under his care for over two decades.

For more than 33 years, Dr. Schmetterer has been deeply committed to the well-being of his community. Beyond the operating room, he finds fulfillment in helping patients regain their health so they can enjoy life’s moments—whether biking along the Ohio Pyle River, walking through Mill Creek Park, or celebrating family milestones.
